Year 2 Reading

Key Performance Indicators

 

  • Reads accurately by blending sounds in words that contain the graphemes taught so far, especially recognising alternative sounds for graphemes.
  • Reads accurately words of two or more syllables that contain the same graphemes as above and the suffixes from Appx 1
  • Reads aloud books closely matched to their improving phonic knowledge, sounding out unfamiliar words accurately, automatically and without undue hesitation.
  • Shares favourite phrases and clarifies meaning of new vocabulary
  • Checks that the text makes sense to them and corrects inaccurate reading
  • Demonstrates understanding of what is read by drawing on own knowledge and information provided
  • Predicts what might happen on the basis of what has been read so far
  • Answers and generates questions, including those based on inference
  • Develops pleasure in reading, motivation to read, vocabulary and understanding by discussing the sequence of events in books and how items of information are related
  • Identifies key aspects of fiction and non-fiction; explains how and why texts are structured according to purpose
  • Develops pleasure in reading, motivation to read, vocabulary and understanding by retelling a range of stories, fairy stories and traditional tales

  • Reads all the common exception words in Appx 1
  • Justifies views about what has been read with reference to the text
  • Uses the grammar terms in Appx 2 when discussing reading
  • Recognises simple recurring literary language in stories and poems
  • Identifies cause and effect in both narrative and non-fiction (eg what prompted a character's behaviour in a story; why certain dates are commemorated annually)
  • Takes part in discussion about books, considering the opinions of others
  • Reads and recites some poems by heart

 

Year 2 Writing

Key Performance Indicators

 

  • Writes letters of the correct size, orientation and relationship to one another using horizontal and diagonal joins taught
  • Segments spoken words into phonemes and represents these by graphemes, spelling many correctly
  • Uses the apostrophe in words with contracted forms and for singular possession
  • Spells words with suffixes -ment, -ness, -less, -ful, -ly correctly
  • Uses capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks mostly correctly to demarcate sentences
  • Uses commas correctly to separate items in a list and after some fronted adverbials
  • Maintains consistency of present/past tense when writing; some use of progressive form
  • Uses expanded noun phrases to add description and detail
  • Constructs co-ordination (using or, and, then, but) and subordination (when, if, that, because)
  • Proof-reads to check for errors and makes some corrections
  • Writes from memory simple dictated sentence types using the GPCs, tenses and punctuation taught so far 

 

Other Performance Indicators

 

  • Uses knowledge of spelling, including homophones, to write both single-syllable and multi-syllabic words
  • Spells the common exception words in the Year 2 list correctly
  • Knows how some texts types are structured and applies this to writing
  • Thinks aloud as they collect ideas,  draft and re-read to check their meaning is clear
  • Uses the grammar terminology for Year 2 set out in Appx 2 (p76) when talking about and evaluating own writing
