Key Performance Indicators
- Applies knowledge of root words, prefixes and suffixes as listed in the National Curriculum to determine the meaning of new words
- Clarifies understanding by exploring and discussing the meaning of new vocabulary and technical terms in context
- Understands and uses the majority of grammatical and technical terms needed for discussing what they hear and read such as figurative language, analogy, style and effect
- Reading is fluent and effortless across all subjects, not just in English
- Summarises orally and in writing the main ideas, identifying key themes and conventions from what is read
- Retrieves, records and presents information from non-fiction in a variety of formats
- Uses inference to deepen understanding of characters' feelings, thoughts and motives, and offers explanations
- Provides reasoned justifications orally and in writing for their views about a text and uses relevant quotes
- Summarises orally and in writing key ideas drawn from within and across texts
- Participates in discussions about texts defending a point of view in debates and formal presentations
- Is familiar with a wide range of literature including myths, legends and traditional stories, modern fiction, classic fiction and from other cultures

- Explains how language, structure and presentation contribute to meaning

Year 6 Writing

- Uses brackets, dashes, commas, hyphens, colons and semi-colons correctly
- Ensures the consistent and correct use of tenses throughout a piece of writing
- Varies sentences through the use of adverbials and the placing of clauses
- Uses the passive voice to affect the presentation of information in a sentence
- Uses a range of cohesive language devices to make links within and across paragraphs
- Integrates description, action and dialogue for balanced narratives
- Chooses layout devices, such as headings, sub-headings, columns, bullets, or tables, to structure text effectively
- Understands and applies language and vocabulary typical of informal and formal situations, according to purpose
- Adopts and sustains a viewpoint in both narrative and non-fiction writing
- Proof-reads for meaning, spelling and punctuation and makes improvements to enhance and clarify meaning
Other Performance Indicators
- Makes judicious choices of grammar and vocabulary to create the intended effect
- Draws on rules, morphology and etymology from Yr 5/6 list (p66-72) to spell correctly - only occasional errors in complex words
- Deliberately shapes writing to withhold, expand, emphasise or develop for effect
- Writes dictated complex sentences accurately including full range of punctuation
- Uses the grammar terminology for Key Stages 1 and 2 set out in Appx 2 when discussing their own and others' writing
- Plans quickly and effectively ideas for writing, drawing on what has been read and explored from a wide range of sources
