  • Greswold success at this year's South Solihull Cross Country event

    Wed 19 Oct 2022

The first major inter-school sports' competition took place at Old Silhillians over two evenings recently.  The South Solihull Schools' Cross Country team event always kicks off the year's busy sporting calendar and, as always, Greswold was heavily involved with the children performing fantastically well.

Our year 6 boys' team won their event with a combined score of just 72 points, 37 points better than the second placed team (The aim of Cross Country is to get the lowest score) with the girls' year 5 team achieving a bronze medal place too!

Thank you to Miss Bragg, Mrs Beddow, Mr Chater, Mr Isles and Mrs Foster to trained and/or accompanied the children at the event.  All of the children represented the school, and South Solihull for that matter, magnificently well and made their teachers and families very proud.  Well done children!

  • End of term House Point assemblies celebrate children's successes and highlights!

    Wed 19 Oct 2022

This morning's House Point assemblies not only celebrated pupil successes in achieving the most points in their class, but also helped the children to reflect on their personal highlights of the first half term.

On site Parent Consultations, the Book Fair, Harvest Festivals, writing displays, new Supersonic Phonics Friends' lessons and the fact that lots of children are still walking, cycling and scooting to school were all examples of things which were discussed.

With regards to this final highlight, the pupils were also informed that the Travel Tracker will be reintroduced to the school starting on Monday 31st October with each child being allocated a symbol and being able to log their travel from home or school if necessary.  The badge threshold will change to only one active journey a week, compared to the Active Travel Campaign's three!

The children's attendance was celebrated too.  Whole school attendance so far this year is just over 96% compared to last year's 94%, an obvious improvement already and not far off school's overall aim of 97%.  Chaffinches in year 4 lead the way in attendance this term and received a certificate.  So far attendance in that class is over 98%!  Otters in year 2 also received a certificate for the most improved attendance this term.  They even scored 100% attendance this week meaning they received the weekly trophy too.

St George's is leading the way so far in the House Point competition with a score of 41 points with St Patrick's in 2nd on 40 points, St David's in 3rd on 39 points and St Andrew's in 4th on 32 points.

The assembly concluded with a reflection about being thankful for all the hard work and determination of others to keep the children safe, happy and motivated.

  • The Book Fair returns next week! Just in time for Parent Consultation evenings!

    Wed 12 Oct 2022

Our Book fair returns to school next week to coincide with Parent Consultation evenings.  It will be held in the library on Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 October from 4pm.  We will be accepting payment by cash or card.  Parents can view the books available to buy on:

    https://bookfairs.scholastic.co.uk/travelling-books/the-books

Parents of Nursery pupils are encouraged to visit the Book Fair, if you wanted to, on one of these evenings after school, as it won't be possible to run the fair on the week of your meetings.

    Thank you

  • Writing success

    Fri 07 Oct 2022

This afternoon, some pupils from Y4 took time out from their busy afternoon to share this week's wonderful writing with Mrs Scott. Their learning task was to write a detailed character introduction and to be successful they were encouraged to use powerful vocabulary, a variety of sentence starters with necessary commas and a simile or metaphor. Mrs Scott was very impressed. Have a look at the Y4 writing below but see if you can spot an example from Y6 which was recognised as part of our Star Pupil assembly this morning.

  • Writing across the school

    Thu 06 Oct 2022

We are proud of how all children are already demonstrating their writing talents. Have a look at how we are celebrating their writing across the school.

  • Harvest bringing the community back together again!

    Mon 03 Oct 2022

Greswold's value of belonging was well and truly demonstrated this morning with the reintroduction of Harvest Festivals back at St Helen's Church on St Helen's Road.  Representatives of St Helen's Church led by Reverend Sue were wonderful hosts and thoroughly enjoyed having all the children from years' 1-6 (in two separate assemblies) at the church to celebrate Harvest and to bring our community closer together.

The children listened to and took part in the story of The Rich Farmer, were entertained and educated by a quiz about where in the world some of our fruit came from, and sang each Harvest song beautifully.  They also got to have a walk through a beautiful autumnal wood on the way to the event.

Thank you to Mrs Rochelle who made the wonderful display at the front of the church hall and to the PTA who helped to box the generous donations from our parents ready to be delivered to food banks and charities.

Next week, a number of our bi-lingual children will visit the Hermitage on Lode Lane to deliver more of the donations to the housing community there as well as spending sometime talking to them about their first language and teaching them a few things we're sure!
