Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
A strategy that Greswold employs to help children retain knowledge and store it their long term memories is to demonstrate how all learning is connected and to present using different contexts.
Within this strategy, school staff use assemblies, classroom, corridor and hall displays, home learning and, most effectively, cross-curricular learning to help give added context and purpose to lessons so that children can visibly see that learning is inter-connected across our entire curriculum.
Staff are particularly skilled at interweaving common learning threads across a range of subjects so that children can be successful in retaining the breadth of knowledge and understanding set out in the national curriculum.
In our school halls, you'll see displays which replicate classroom endeavours which highlight the locality of world events as well as where things fit in chronologically.
Outside the library, the children can choose books which relate to current world events which they encounter in lessons or even at home. They can then use their curiosity to explore these events and themes even further.
The wonderful theme days which each year group partakes in (Y6 Stone Age day and Y3 Ancient Egyptian day just last week!) help to immerse the children in their learning and provides a pertinent context to relate further learning to.
Even simple learning posters and charts at home which children may have up in their bedrooms will help with their ability to retain information and interconnect learning.
Have a look through the picture gallery to see some of these strategies in practice. Viewing using a laptop will enable you to view the captions.
Year 6 pupils were transported back in time to the Stone Age today as a prelude to their upcoming history curriculum learning. The immersive day helped the children to visualise what life would have been like to many years ago and will help them with other aspects of their learning such as history, English and Art. Well done to the staff and to families for making the day even better by donning very authentic costumes!
Following on from December's sign language of the month is this month's language which is Hungarian. This is the first time we've had Hungarian as language of the month. As well as learning some key phrases of Hungarian, could you suggest 5 key facts about Hungary? For starters, what is the capital city of Hungary?
Yesterday evening, Greswold's Y6 Rowing team were involved in South Solihull's annual event at Langley Secondary School.
After training with Mr Isles (and his personal rowing machine), the children attained really impressive results finishing 3rd (boys) and 3rd (girls) respectively.
Thank you to Mr Isles and Mrs Powell who were also in attendance and well done to everyone involved.
During the second half of the autumn term, Year 6 had three visits from staff at Metro Bank in Solihull centre. These visits involved the children learning about savings, what interest is, the difference between debit and credit, what investment is and how to balance an account.
This week, each class had the opportunity to visit Metro Bank in Solihull and find out what happens inside a real bank. Children got to see how an ATM works, how a bank card is made, how you can take your coins in to be counted and they even got to look inside the bank's vault. They also learned about different roles you could have in a bank.
Pupils really enjoyed the opportunity, behaved impeccably and showed our values throughout.
Well done Year 6. We hope the skills you have acquired will be put to good use in the future!
Year 3 pupils took part in an Ancient Egyptian themed day today, helping to immerse them in their new learning for this term. Well done to the children and their families for taking time to make them look fabulously authentic for their special day. We're sure such an experience will have fuelled their curiosity so thank you to the year 3 staff for organising such a memorable event.
Last week, Year 5 and 6 pupils were visited by Zoe and Eddie from Specialising in Sport who delivered their annual Sportshall Athletics Roadshow, an event which acts as a prelude to the children's PE lessons this half term as well as the School Games Sportshall Athletics competition, in which Greswold are current Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire County Champions.
Each class were introduced to the 6 field events, with their performance being recorded as a way of complementing the PE Curriculum's Personal Best programme. Children will then retest themselves later on in the term to see if they've improved on their scores in Chest Push, Soft Javelin, Standing Long Jump, Standing Triple Jump, Vertical Jump and Speed Bounce.
It was also a chance for Mr Hornsey to start choosing children to represent the school at the upcoming Sportshall Athletics qualifying event at Tudor Grange Tennis Centre on Tuesday 23rd January.
Up to 30 pupils will be chosen altogether with competitors being allowed to take part in up to four events in total (2 track and 2 field events).
Fortunately, this year's event coincides nicely with the PTA's very generous contribution of funding a brand new Craft athletics kit which the children will wear for the first time on the 23rd.

Congratulations to Ahon in year 6 who recently found out that the short story he entered into a national writing competition, organised by the publishing company Junoberry books, was selected as one of the winners!
This mean's Ahon's entry, a seasonal themed short story called Christmas Miracle was selected to be published in a book of short stories called Seasonal Shorts: Christmas 2023.
What an amazing achievement Ahon, we're all very proud of you and keep on writing!
Coach Cameron from the Football Development Scheme will continue his lunchtime football club for years' 5 and 6 boys and girls this term. Please see the picture gallery below for when your child is able to attend.
In terms of the school football season, there will be a significant number of matches for both boys and girls over the next few weeks so if your child wishes to be considered, they must attend football club first.
Greswold would like to wish everyone associated with our school community a very happy new year. We hope 2024 brings you peace and prosperity.
