How we assess writing

Writing is assessed on an ongoing basis throughout a year. Throughout the year, teachers build up a bank of evidence about each child's writing in order to make a judgement about their attainment. Children produce pieces of work independently which their teacher assesses against the year group Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) using the Teacher Assessment Framework (TAF). These are KPIs grouped into banks of statements for working towards the standard, working at the standard and working at greater depth. For a children to achieve a standard, they must be able to demonstrate evidence all of the statements listed. They are not 'best fit'. For example, for children to be judged as working towards the standard in Year 3, they would need to demonstrate all of the statements in this part of the TAF.  You can see the TAF for each year group below.
