  • 'Punctuality Push' update - Week 5 and 6

    Fri 26 Apr 2024

    Dear Parents and Carers,

Greswold would like to update you on our 'Punctuality Push' campaign which draws to an end this week.  It's also a chance to summarise what has taken place over the last six weeks and to signpost families to support and guidance which could help to improve and maintain punctuality in the future.

    Week

Number of late pupils in total

    in the mornings

    'Traffic' being given as reason
    Week 1 (4th - 8th March) 104 46
    Week 2 (11th - 15th March) 103 46
    Week 3 (18th - 22nd March) 87 40
    Week 4 (8th - 12th April) 72 26
    Week 5 15th - 19th April) 110 76
    Week 6 (22nd 26th April)  94 50
    Total  570 284

When comparing the above results with the data originally gathered which prompted our campaign on being punctual, there has been a very satisfying improvement.  There were 777 lates between 8th January and the 21st February compared to 570 during our 'Punctuality Push', an improvement 207.  Lates being given to traffic improved to 284 from 354 which is pleasing too.

However, when you look closely at the data, it does feel like the improvement could have been even better.  In weeks' 3 and 4, the total number of lates was 159, however during the following two weeks, the figure had actually risen to 204, exacerbated by a morning of rain this week which caused 30 families to be late.  Please remember to add time onto your journey when it is raining as there will be more vehicles on the road.

Over the past six weeks, a range of different activities have taken place to promote punctuality:

    • Mr Hornsey has held two coffee mornings for parents to share frustrations, give feedback and seek guidance.
    • Parents have been encouraged to communicate ideas and tips for getting to school on time.
    • Through an assembly, pupils in KS2 have been taught the life-long importance of punctuality.
    • A recording has been made for all families to access which gives a more personable view of the importance of being on time.  A selection of families have already been signposted to this recording but anyone can view it by clicking on the link below.

Even though 'Punctuality Push' has come to an end, the website page dedicated to being punctual will remain for parents to access at any time, with the link below taking you straight there.

Also, the Sustainable Travel page provides families with a range of initiatives to explore, which can help to promote active travelling and provide parents and children with other ways of attending school on time.

To all of our families here at Greswold, thank you for continuing to work in partnership with school in relation to being on time, both in the mornings and afternoons.  Together, we can ensure the pupils develop the awareness and attitudes they need to help them to be successful in their future years.

  • The fields are back open! (so fingers crossed for no more rain)

    Thu 25 Apr 2024

After having to spend lunchtimes on their designated playgrounds over the last few months, the junior and infant playing areas (fields) were finally reopened for the children to enjoy.

This has meant that children can spread out more, can access a wider range of activities and juniors can have their lunches on the field using picnic blankets.

Thank you to our wonderful Greswold PTA who have funded nearly £1,000 worth of new lunchtime equipment for juniors, infants and reception children and which should be arriving very shortly.

  • Good weather and good company help to make Standon Bowers a fabulous success for year 4

    Wed 24 Apr 2024

This weekend marked the first residential visit of this academic year with year 4 pupils spending the weekend at Standon Bowers in Staffordshire.

Luckily for the children and the elven members of school staff who accompanied them, the weather was good and the children represented themselves, their classes and their year group magnificently throughout.

Thank you to the year 4 parents who have already thanked and shared with staff their children's positive feedback about the visit.

The children took part in a whole host of activities including caving, bouldering, low ropes, bridge building, archery and other outdoor games whilst enjoying the usual evening campfire with lots of songs and lots of laughter.

Thank you to Mr Isles for being the lead organiser and thank you to the staff for giving up their weekend to ensure every child an an enjoyable experience.

  • It's Scootfit time for Year 3!

    Wed 24 Apr 2024

As a result of Greswold's ongoing work with the Solihull Sustainable Travel Team, year 3 and 5 will be given the opportunity to receive Scootfit lessons, completely free of charge.

First up were year 3 who very much enjoyed developing and refining their scooting skills.  The sessions have so far also helped to build the children's confidence, self esteem and fitness levels.

The Scootfit programme also demonstrates Greswold's desire to promote active ways of travelling to and from school, thus alleviating traffic congestion and encouraging children to adopt healthy lifestyles.

Thank you to school staff for organising such a fabulous opportunity for the children.

  • The day the Romans came to school!

    Tue 23 Apr 2024

Yesterday, year 3 pupils took part in a very entertaining and informative Roman theme day, wonderfully organised by the class teachers and staff.

Thank you to all our families who helped the children to feel very much part of the immersive experience, their costumes were fabulous!

Experiences and activities included archery, archaeology, battle formations, games, settlements, quizzes and investigating Roman artefacts.

Thank you to the PTA for helping to fund part of this curriculum enhancement through the funding of our visitor from the History Guy Company.

All in all, a fabulous way to start a new History topic, helping to make learning even more memorable!

  • Magnificent achievement by Miss Hill, an inspiration to us all!

    Mon 22 Apr 2024

Over 50,000 athletes took part in this weekend's world famous London Marathon, and amongst them was a member of Greswold's own school staff, no less.  Miss Hill, whose roles include Learning Support Assistant in year 5 and lunchtime supervisor, participated in the gruelling race after months of training and preparation.

The charity she was raising money for was AngelmanUK, a charity which supports those living with Angelman syndrome and their support networks.  Miss Hill has so far raised over £2000 which is an incredible achievement in itself and, although very tough by her own admittance, managed to complete the 26 mile course.

After admitting that she felt it was important for children and young people to see that you can do anything you put your mind to, Miss Hill is most definitely a true inspiration to us all.

    What a wonderfully inspiring story!

  • 20mph Buryfield Road speed limit now in operation!

    Fri 12 Apr 2024

    Dear Parents and Carers,

We have been informed by Highway Management at Solihull MBC that the new 20mph speed restrictions on Buryfield Road have now been formally implemented.  The signage was installed several weeks ago but the restrictions are now being enforced.

For the sake of our Greswold families, especially those who walk to and from school, please drive safely and adhere to the new speed limit.

    Thank you

  • 'Punctuality Push' - Week 4 update

    Fri 12 Apr 2024

    Dear Parents and Carers,

Today marked the end of the penultimate week of our 'Punctuality Push' initiative and this week's results are still looking more positive.  The chart below shows this week's daily results:

    Day

    Number of pupils

    late in the morning

    Number of reasons

    given as 'Traffic'

    Monday 8th  17 7
    Tuesday 9th 25 5
    Wednesday 10th 4 0
    Thursday 11th  17 8
    Friday 12th  9 6

Below is a link to our video resource centre where you can access a 15 minute recording which helps to raise awareness of the possible implications of regular lateness on pupils themselves and the school itself.

Where Greswold's records indicate a pupil being regularly late, families will receive a polite request to ensure the recording is viewed.

Thank you to our families for their continued support and co-operation during the last few weeks, in highlighting an incredibly important lifelong habit and for helping to demonstrate our school values of Belonging and Respect.

  • All smiles for 1st prize in the PTA Easter raffle!

    Fri 12 Apr 2024

The winner of the 1st prize in this year's PTA Easter raffle collected their brand new television this morning.  Vaanika and her family were thrilled to take home their prize and are photographed with Nerissa, Chair of the PTA and Mr Hornsey, President of the PTA.  Thank you to Solace Property Consultancy Ltd for donating such an impressive prize and thank you to all our families who generously took part in this year's raffle.

Altogether the PTA raised £750 profit.  As ever, the funds will be used to enhance the education and experiences of the children here at Greswold.   .

  • An impressive and credible finish to the boys' football league season!

    Thu 11 Apr 2024

Yesterday evening, the boys' school football team took part in the South Solihull Large Schools' play-off finals, an end of season competition to crown the best school in South Solihull for 2023-24.

Greswold's participation was a result of winning their individual league, topping the table with 4 wins, a draw and only one loss.  They were up against two other league winners and the best runner-up from all three leagues.

Their semi-final against St Alphege was a very physical match with a great deal of quality on show.  A late comeback by Greswold wasn't enough to overcome their opponents with the final score being 4-2 to an impressive St Alphege team, who eventually went on to be crowned champions in the final.

Greswold's 3rd/4th place play-off was another close affair with their opponents Knowle eventually winning 4-3 in a match that went one way then the other!

Thank you to all of the families who attended and gave their support and well done to the players for their commitment and endeavour this season.  It was very evident to see the school's values were impeccably demonstrated by each team member even when things weren't going the way they wanted them to.

Thank you to everyone involved, 4th place from an original list if over 20 schools who entered was a brilliant achievement.
