Illegal parking outside of school

The Greswold senior leadership team are aware of continuing incidents of illegal parking around school, something which really saddens us.  Therefore, we have consulted the following West Midlands Police website for advice and guidance about how incidents can be reported.  It is also a possible avenue for school to report offences too, however that's something we can't always prioritise due to lack of time and capacity.

However, the site does clarify what illegal parking actually is, as you can see below:

If the vehicle is parked:

  • on zig-zag lines
  • dangerously
  • in a way that would prevent emergency vehicles from accessing

If the vehicle is parked:

  • over a dropped kerb
  • on a pedestrian crossing (including the area marked by the zig-zag lines)
  • in spaces reserved for Blue Badge holders, residents or motorbikes (unless entitled to do so)
  • in marked taxi bays, cycle lanes or red lines
  • near a school entrance, bus or tram stop

As a school, we feel that dropping off on Zig Zags and close to school entrances, including double yellow lines, constitutes parking and is therefore still illegal.  We have also contacted Parking Services at Solihull Council to see if there any other avenues we can explore to reduce inconsiderate and illegal parking so we await to hear their response.

It is a shame that a website page we use to celebrate successes has to be, on this occasion, used to highlight a problem which wouldn't be a problem if all vehicle users worked in partnership with school's expectations.

It's important to state that our stance on this matter comes from a duty of care to protect our children and their families from any sort of inconsiderate and dangerous driving, so please be aware of others whilst travelling.  Thank you to the vast majority of families who already do work in partnership with Greswold.

School will update this page when we receive further guidance from Parking Services.  In the meantime, illegal parking can be reported to West Midlands Police using the link provided above.
