Watch Mr Thorne make words with the long i sound using the 'y' grapheme here. then, sort the words with the 'y' grapheme by the sound that it makes. Does it make the short 'y' sound like in yellow, or does it make the long i sound?

English

This week we are focusing on plurals.

A plural is a word that tells you there is more than one. For example, 'toy' is singular. This means there is only one toy. The plural form is 'toys' which means that there is more than one toy. To turn a noun into a plural we usually have to add 's' or 'es' to the noun.

Read through the plurals presentation below and then choose your challenge and write the singular and plural form for each word.

Maths

This week in maths we are learning about weight and mass. Answer some of the questions on the presentation below to recap what you already know about weight.

Then, order the objects from lightest to heaviest.

Use a hanger, some string and 2 identical containers such as yoghurt pots, shopping bags or cups to build your own set of balance scales. Then find different objects around your home and practice comparing their weight by placing each object in one of the containers. The container that falls lower is the heavier item. Compare all of your items and place them in order of lightest to heaviest.

Use the ideas you wrote down yesterday to write your own list poem describing what you found in your a dragon's lair. You need to use adjectives and the correct plural endings on the end of each noun. You can also include conjunctions in your list poem as an extra challenge. Read my example below:

There was one angry dragon because he had just been woken up,

There were two scaly dragon eggs,

There were three bejewelled crowns,

There were four cracked skulls and rattling jaw bones.

There were five glistening diamonds,

There were six heavy, locked treasure chests with shiny locks.

There were seven bags of gold coins,

There were eight glowing fire torches and they lit up the whole lair.

There were nine sharp arrows because people tried to slay the dragon before.

There were ten stony steps so that you can sneekily escape

In the dragon's lair!

Maths

For this activity you will need:

Your DIY weighing scales

items from around your house

a collection of small (as identical as possible) objects to weigh with, for example lego bricks, counters, stones, grapes, pens, pasta pieces etc.

Using the scales that you made on Tuesday, measure the weight of each item that you found by finding out how many of each small object your item weighs. Place your large item on your scales and then add your small objects one by one until the scales balance. Then, count up how many small objects it took to balance the scales! This is how much your large item weighs.

Then, write sentences to describe the weight of your large item. For example 'The teddy bear weighs 30 lego bricks.'
