• There's so much to learn when eating healthily!

  This half term, Year 3 been learning how to make a healthy salad as part of their Design and Technology lessons.

   

  However, in true Greswold style, there was so much more to be added into the 'mixing pot' of these valuable life lessons.  Not only had children been learning about staying healthy as part of their Healthy Me lessons in PSD, they also used measuring scales to accurately measure out the ingredients, thus applying their Maths learning.  Understanding and categorising foods into the different food groups along with using terms such as absorbing and dissolving demonstrated how Science was very much of their daily lives too.  Finally, the skills of peeling, grating and cutting enabled children to develop their D&T skills too.

   

  Well done children, you'll be making dinner for your families before you know it! 

   

      

  

• Year 3 and 4 pupils enjoy lunchtime football coaching, courtesy of the English Schools' Football Week!

  This week marked English Schools' Football Week with a range of activities on offer for children to take part in.  One such activity involved year 3 and 4 pupils taking part in lunchtime football coaching sessions from the Football Development Scheme, something usually reserved for years' 5 and 6. 

   

  Due to the interest and enthusiasm shown by the children for such an opportunity, we invited not one but two coaches for each session. 

   

  As you can see, the children had a fantastic time and it was really good to see so many girls taking part too. . 

  

• Y6 pupils excel in Level 3 Bikeability!

  Last week, 64 children from Year 6 took part in the Level 3 Bikeability training course.  This was a 2-hour session that equipped children with the skills they need to stay safe in more challenging urban situations that they may encounter on a commute to secondary school in the future.  The course involved riding assertively, maintaining suitable riding positions, cooperating and respecting other road users, negotiating junctions and riding on roads with speeds above 30 mph.

   

  The visiting staff complimented our children's maturity and responsibility out on the roads. Each child who took part earned a badge and certificate and well done for showing your Greswold values out of school. 

  

• Today's assemblies highlight Greswold's interconnected thinking!

  This morning's key stage assemblies were the perfect platform to showcase the efforts Greswold staff go to to help give extra context to our learning in school, thus promoting our ambition to help children embed information to their long term memories. 

   

  The Picture News for this week centred around the recent new story about Manchester United's new stadium plans and whether football stadiums should be used for more than just football.

   

  The subject of the news article tied in perfectly with this week's English Schools' Football Week, allowing staff to promote the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle.   

   

  However, it was also an opportunity to relate the article to today's religious event of Eid-al-Fitr due to the fact that a recent Iftar, during Ramadan, was organised at Villa Park, home of Aston Villa FC.  The locality of each stadium and it's area were also pointed out on our hall maps. 

   

  These connections meant PE, Science, English, Geography, RE and PSD were all explored at the same time! 

  

• A positive monitoring cycle confirms all pupils get a really good deal here at Greswold

  Over the past two weeks, members of the senior leadership team have undertaken a range of monitoring activities, across school, something which happens on a regular basis as part of our School Improvement Plan and Performance Management cycles.   This is to help evaluate the quality of teaching and learning throughout at any one time.

   

  We are really pleased and proud to inform parents that the standards of teaching and learning at Greswold are as strong as ever! 

   

  Lesson observations have clearly demonstrated how meticulously staff are planning for the provision of their pupils.  They have also shown how skilled staff are at questioning the pupils to move their learning on as well as always maintaining high expectations of attitude and behaviour.  Children are motivated to succeed and improve, and staff use an array of strategies to make learning memorable, as well as developing the resilience and independence of the children, helping to make them life long learners. 

   

  Here at Greswold, we are perfectionists so, as always, there are elements of our provision we would like to improve further.  However, as a whole school community, it's reassuring and very satisfying to celebrate how lucky we are to have such a wonderfully professional staff team and immenseley hardworking pupils.  

  

• Children take part in Water 'SAFE'ty assemblies by the Canal Trust

  Last week we welcomed Chris from Canal and River Trust who spoke to our KS1/2 pupils about water safety.

   

  Chris reminded us that the different types of water around us e.g. canals, lakes are not suitable for swimming in (swimming pools are a much better alternative). Our pupils were able to spot hazards by the waterside and learnt how to keep themselves 'SAFE' (which stands for Stay Away From the Edge). Children were also told about the importance of floating in a star shape if they or anyone else falls in.

   

  Please take some to ask your child/ren about the other things they learnt. 

  

• Greswold showing our value of respect in our local community

  Greswold's Eco Action Group took part in 'The Great British Spring Clean' this morning by litter picking along Buryfield Road and in Coldlands Wood. They worked really hard as a team to collect 2 bags of litter. 

   

  Most of the litter we found was actually outside the front of school, near the vehicle and pedestrian entrances, therefore we'd like to remind all parents and children to be careful not to drop litter on the way to and from school.

   

  We would also like to encourage families to get involved with community litter picking around Solihull and take part in 'The Great British Spring Clean', which continues until the 6^th April. More information can be found on the following websites:

• An immersive visit to St Alphege Church to help Y5 learning

  As part of our ongoing commitment to providing enhanced curriculum experiences (known as the Greswold journey), Year 5 visited St Alphege's church in the centre of Solihull on Friday. 

   

  The purpose of the visit was for the children to gain a deeper understanding of the Easter journey, re-told through storytelling, art and reflection. 

   

  The children were impeccable role models for Greswold walking to and from the church demonstrating all of our BRICKS values. 

   

  Another successful visit for Greswold. 

  

• Once again, Greswold's artistic skills are a sight to behold!

  The PTA's Easter colouring competition provided the whole school with some fabulous creations to admire.  The PTA received dozens of entries from across the school and have now chosen their class winners, who will receive their prizes today.  

   

  Thank you to the PTA for showcasing the entries with such a wonderfully eye-catching display in the long corridor too!
