After a brief discussion about their ongoing Victorian projects, Mr Hornsey noticed an impressive piece of artwork depicting a Victorian pier in Year 5 Elms last week. The work, belonging to Elise and part of her Victorian project, prompted Mr Hornsey to set her a bit of extra homework! As most piers were built during the Victorian era, which pier is the actual longest in the UK?
To her credit, Elise was armed and ready with the answer the following week:
The longest pier in the UK is Southend pier in Southend-on-Sea in Essex. It extends 1.34 miles into the Thames estuary.
Well done Elise and a perfect example of our value of curiosity on show.

Greswold have a long standing tradition in Sportshall Athletics and are current reigning County Champions. This year's event started on Wednesday at Tudor Grange Tennis Centre with over 20 schools competing for a place in the South Solihull Area Final.
A very close competition saw Greswold finish 2nd in the qualifying heat meaning they will now progress to the Area Final as second seed overall in the large schools' competition. A really positive start to the competition saw the children win 9 of the 24 events competed in against seven other schools. The girls' team actually won all but one of their track events!
It's now onto the Area Final in February and plenty more time to practise!
In our ever increasing commitment to teaching our children at Greswold about current affairs and preparing them for their future, the Parliament Education Service came in on Wednesday to share with Key Stage 2 all about the work of parliament and government in the UK. As part of the assembly, several volunteers came up to the front to show how bills and laws are passed through parliament. An incredibly interesting way of learning about real life.
As we welcome in The Year of the Snake, we would like to wish all our families celebrating a Happy Lunar New Year!
If any families would like to join in with any Lunar New Year celebrations, there will be lots going on in Touchwood Shopping Centre at the weekend.
Four pupils from Year 6 accompanied Mrs Scott to the Holocaust Memorial Day Service in the Civic Suite at the Council House in Solihull. The programme for the service was inspiring and reflective' pupils especially appreciated hearing from Tomi Komoly, BEM, who is a Holocaust survivor. Our pupils showed tremendous maturity and respect throughout and added their signatures to the book of remembrance.
On Tuesday, Mr Isles and Mrs Rochelle took four teams to Langley Secondary school for this year's regional Level 2 School Games Rowing competition. This event is open to all schools in South Solihull.
The children, to their credit, have been practising really hard for the event, after school on Mondays, and their commitment definitely paid off!
At the end of a very competitive regional final, all of our teams performed admirably with one of the boys' teams narrowly missing out on progressing to the next round after finishing 3rd overall. However, one of Greswold's girls' teams, which included Esme, Heidi, Molly and Paola, finished 2nd overall meaning they will now progress to the County Finals in February.
Well done to everyone involved and we look forward to hearing about how the girls get on in late February.
Recently, Year 6 pupils have received training from the Cycling Team from Solihull's Sustainable Travel department. This pre-immersive training programme has helped the children to look at safety and hazards on the road when cycling, a perfect follow-up to their Level 2 Bikeability course in year 5. The trainers also got them to think about observations and checking the road before carrying out turns.
Later in the year, there will be a number of pupils eligible to participate in Level 3 Bikeability so these sessions were ideal preparation. Thank you to year 6 staff for organising such as pertinent learning experience and the perfect transition for when pupils start their secondary schools.
Even though many of us feel like hibernating in January, let's know let the weather get us down! Living Streets', the company who runs our Travel Tracker, has released a Winter Wander-land scavenger hunt.
Use the fun resource to help inspire your children to spot winter wonders as they walk, wheel, cycle or scoot to school - it’s a fantastic way to keep the magic alive on colder mornings. If you'd prefer to download the form then click on the link below:
