Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
Happy New Year to our Tamil families. Currently, at Greswold, we have a number of pupils whose families are from a Tamil background, originating from Southern India or regions of Sri Lanka.
Puthandu or Tamil New Year is celebrated on the first day of the Tamil month Chithirai, typically falling on April 14th. It marks the beginning of the Tamil solar calendar and is a day of new beginnings and joy.
Thank you to Tanvikaa for designing a wonderfully colourful and informative poster to celebrate the occasion.

Dear Parents and Carers,
Although this week’s Parent/Carer Forum was cancelled, there were several enquiries from parents we would still like to respond to. These are as follows:
Phonics enquiry about spelling ‘Alien’ words – Aliens words (pseudo-words) are made-up, nonsense words used in phonics to test if children can accurately decode (blend) sounds rather than on relying on memory. Examples include steck, quemp, jeb, vop, chirt, and flop.
Be assured that these words don’t form spelling lists for the children to learn. Children are not expected to spell these words, simply to decode them.
EYFS/KS1 Universal meals – At Greswold, unless there’s extenuating/medical circumstances, every child in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are expected to have Universal Free School Meals. This has been the case for at least 10 years now and helps to reassure families and school staff that children are getting a balanced diet whilst at school. Our school meals are provided by Solihull Catering so any enquiries about the menu should be directed to them using the following contact address:
In respect of children being able to access the school menu, especially younger children, each class has a visual presentation of the menu on their whiteboard screen first thing in the morning to help the children make their choice. This is done during registration.
Extra-Curricular clubs and ‘lettings’ – Extra-Curricular clubs are activities which take place directly after the school day finishes led by external providers or school staff. To book a child onto a club, parents can do this through the provider, the school office or the member of staff.
Evening ‘lettings’ are organisations that sub-let our facilities to run an evening club. These usually take place after school clubs and are run by organisers, separate to the school, who provide us with their DBS checks as, on occasion, their club may coincide with a school event, e.g. Parent Consultations.
Holiday club dates – Greswold Greyhounds’ offer non-term time holiday clubs based at school. The dates of these are released to parents in advance and usually take place when the children aren’t in school. However, holiday clubs don’t take place on the final two weeks of the summer holidays, on bank holidays or at other times when there isn’t enough uptake to warrant running a club. It is a business after all. Therefore, this can affect whether certain weeks can take place at all and will be a reason why changes might be made on short notice.
A fabulous new display appeared in our long corridor this week courtesy of our wonderful PTA. Each child's entry to the annual PTA Easter competition was displayed for everyone to enjoy. The year group and class winners were awarded their prize of an Easter Egg in assembly today too.
Well done to everyone who entered the competition. Once again, Greswold pupils' talents really show off Greswold's positive attitude towards Art and Design.
Well done to year 5 pupils for putting on such an educationally entertaining show this week. Their performance based on their history topic of the Victorian era had a bit of everything. There was singing, dancing, acting and so many relevant facts shared that visiting parents are now experts themselves!
Thank you to year 5 staff for organising such an enthralling show in a just a matter of weeks.
The value of Respect was the primary theme for this morning's House Point assemblies.
Mr Hornsey spoke about how proud he was to see and hear about Grewold children's respectful behaviour during recent out-of-school visits. Not only were the year 1 pupils complimented by an accompanying granparent who sent in a lovely email about how delightful they were on a recent visit to Warwick Castle, but year 5 and 6 pupils who took part in yesterday's Sportshall Athletics County Finals were a real credit to the school and families, especailly compared to some children from other schools.
Mr Hornsey emphasised the need to demonstrate respect at all times, especially at breaktimes and lunchtimes which will be a focus of the whole school next half term.
In terms of the House Point leaderboard, well done to St Patrick's who are catching up with the other houses while St Andrew's stretched their lead at the top. There's still plenty of time for things to change though!
With very little practice and a depleted squad, Greswold still managed to finish 2nd in yesterday's School Games Sportshall Athletics County Finals at North Solihull Sports' Centre.
The County Finals brings together the best 8 schools from each region in Solihull, Coventry and Warwickshire.
Obviously, the standard was very high but by winning 5 out of the 12 track events, Greswold managed to finish second which was an amazing acheivement.
Their attitude, commitment and values were always on show throughout and each member of the team should take full credit for the hardwork they've put in over the past two months. Year 6 as a whole should also take extra credit too as they pushed each member of the team to improve as they all did during their PE sessions in spring which acted as a practice sessions for the competition itself. Well done to everyone for an outstanding Sportshall Athletics season.
Final result:
1st - Grange Farm (Coventry West 308 points
2nd - Greswold (South Solihull) 292 points
3rd - Ernesford Grange (Coventry East) 254 points
4th - Park Lane (Northern Warwickshire) 214pts
5th - Coten End (Central Warwickshire) 190pts
6th - Marston Green (North Solihull) 182pts
7th - Dunchurch Boughton (Eastern Warwickshire) 162pts
8th - St Nicholas (Southern Warwickshire) 152pts
Mrs Scott, Mr Hornsey and Mrs Glover were treated to a piano performance by Rayan in Y2 who played 'The Wind' with skill and confidence. Keep it up, Rayan.
This morning, Dean and Beth from the Christian Renewal Centre came into school to take a special assembly for years' 1-6.
Not only did they revisit the Easter Story using a handful of children to help but they talked about how modern day Easter items such as eggs and Hot Cross buns have symbolic value.
They both also brought with them a most generous donation from the Christian Renenwal centre - a chocolate egg for every pupil in the school.
Thank you to Beth and Dean and everyone at the Chrtistina Renenwal centre for helping school to remember the importance and symbolism of Easter, as part of our Religious Education curriculum.
