Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
This week, children in Year 5 Sycamores were using the RE subject topic of Hajj to broaden their thinking and deepen their understanding of the Islamic pilgrimage.
Like several lessons observed recently which have promoted higher order thinking, this lesson was no exception with children using clues and information to plot a flow chart of where to go, what to visit and most importantly what order and why.
The children showcased their skills in working collaboratively to draw on their collective strengths to produce an end result which would provide a visitor with the perfect pilgrimage experience. Well done children, a fascinating lesson.
As part of Greswold's commitment to recycling and environmental issues, the Eco Team's aim to send second hand and unwanted reading books to Africa came even closer to being realised today.
If you recall, the Eco Team originally raised funds to pay for the transporting of the books by holding a Bring and Buy sale using donated toys. The funds raised will help pay for the shipping of the books, now boxed, on the last leg of their journey to pupils and schools on the continent who are in need of reading materials. There will be 13 boxes in total! Last year, Greswold's donations were sent to children in Nigeria.
Well done to everyone involved in the worthwhile project, a perfect example of how our school values help to drive the ideas and aspirations of our pupils here at Greswold.
To tie in with and add some context to their learning this term, year 2 visited Brandon Marsh last week. Their day was filled with lots of exploration of habitats with the children involved in pond dipping, making homes for hedgehogs and making dens for themselves.
The teamwork on show was excellent really showing off our Greswold value of belonging. Thank you to the staff for organising and supervising the children and thank you to the pupils for their enthusiasm and behaviour.
Last week, year 5 pupils took to the roads on their bikes for their Level 1 and Level 2 Bikeability training. The Bikeability Team from the local authority first of all assessed the confidence of the children in riding their bikes safely and proficiently on the school playground before deciding whether they were ready to venture onto the roads.
From there, children learned how to signal, manoeuvre at junctions from starting positions and ensure they were always aware of what was approaching from all directions.
As always, the children were fabulous and showed great concentration, especially when on the roads.
All children attained their Level 1 badge with most children managing to successfully achieve their Level 2 badge as well. Those children will get the chance to attain their Level 3 award in year 6.
Eva, in year 1, has been demonstrating the Greswold values of Belonging and Kindness recently by working hard to make lots of bracelets and woggles, to sell, to help raise money for a very good cause.
Eva's Beaver group are in urgent need of new tents and she has managed to raise over £100 by selling her very attractive bracelets.
Well done Eva, it's always lovely to hear about how Greswold pupils are actively supporting their community while demonstrating our values. Brilliant news!
Year 3 had a wonderful adventure at Lunt Fort.
All children enjoyed taking part in battle drills where they got to train to be Roman soldiers with their very own wooden training swords and shields, and where they learnt different battle formations and tactics. They also got to explore Roman armour, weapons and hear all about life as a Roman from their very own Roman Guides: Nius, Gius and Rufus. Despite the hot weather, all the children (and adults) seemed to have a fantastic time!
The children then followed up their experiences by designing Roman Villas using Minecraft Education focusing, on including columns, domed roof and archways. One pair of year 3'd even included an oculus, a hole in the roof to allow natural light into the villa!
Thank you to the staff for providing such immersive learning experiences.
After such a successful year for Greswold competing in athletics, it was inevitable that they would produce yet another impressive performance, this time in Borough Sports'.
Borough Sports' is a day long competition for year 6 pupils where teams of 12 boys and 12 girls compete in three events and aim to attain as many points as possible. For the children who rank inside the top 3 in each discipline at the event, there are extra medals to be won too.
Last year, Greswold's Borough Sports' team achieved their best every performance (against other large schools) with a third place finish. However this year, on the back of a successful Cross Country event back in October and winning the County Finals in Sportshall Athletics in March, the children were very confident.
75m sprint, 600m, Shot Putt, Javelin, Standing Long Jump and Long Jump were the events the children could take part in with a relay to finish.
Over 20 schools competed in total, split into 3 leagues according to their size. After all the points were counted, Greswold finished a fabulous 2nd with only Solihull School ahead of them. Athletes from Greswold also won medals in the following events due to finishing in the top 3!
Bronze in Boys' Standing Triple Jump
Silver in Boys' Long Jump
Bronze in Boys' Long Jump
Silver in Girls' Sprint Relay
Bronze in Girls' Standing Triple Jump
Final standings in Large Schools' competition:
(1st) Solihull School
(2nd) Greswold
(3rd) Shirley Heath

(5th) Balsall Common
(6th) Sharman's Cross
(7th) Monkspath

Recently, each class teacher has been showcasing their expertise in delivering lessons which promote a greater depth of understanding within their pupils. These have included Year 5 History lessons on the Vikings, Year 2 performance poetry and Reception's learning involving making bread and butter.
Today was the turn of Nursery pupils to demonstrate their deepening knowledge of minibeasts. The pupil's curiosity was ignited initially by the storybook Superworm, and from there the children have been on minibeast hunts, learning about the habitats of insects. They have been learning how to classify insects and have been developing their language and vocabulary by comparing lengths and sizes of insects. They have also been observing the life cycle of insects too.
This type of project is a perfect example of how Early Years' staff use the pupils own interests to devise a very broad and practical learning experience which deepens their understanding of the subject matter.
Greswold have received plenty of compliments this term from students and schools alike after hosting a number of Y10 students who have been undertaking Work Experience here.
19 pupils from a range of secondary institutions have enjoyed their with us this year, and in particular this term, and their commitment has been very much appreciated by school staff.
Lode Heath, Tudor Grange, Arden, Langley, Hodge Hill, Woodrush and Swanshurst School are just some of the schools we have accommodated students from this year, exemplifying our commitment to lifelong learning whilst emphasising our community outreach aspirations.
Two days after St Patrick's edged the KS1 and Reception Sports' Day, it was St Patrick's again who took the honours at Friday's KS2 Sports' Day.
Thankfully a little cooler than Wednesday, it was still a brilliant turnout by our parent community to support the juniors. After completing some events in the morning, there were still 8 events in the afternoon for everyone to enjoy. Even the drinks stop contained an activity!
Just like Wednesday, the scores were very close with only three points separating 1st and 2nd.
Final standings:
(1st) St Patrick's - 256 points
(2nd) St Andrew's - 253 points
(3rd) St George's - 226 points
(4th) St David's - 210 points
