  • Everything football....

    Fri 27 Jan 2023

The 6th February marks the start of English Schools' Football Week but football fever has already engulfed Greswold this year!

As well as the boys' school football team having an exceptional season so far (another win last night), year 5/6 girls are training for their first match of the season on Tuesday 14th February.  The match is part of a wider football festival taking place at Lode Heath school between 4:45-5:45pm.  A boys' B and C team will also be competing against comparable teams from Dicken's Heath school, something to really look forward to and celebrate.

Yesterday, the boys' A team continued their impressive season with a 3-0 win against Sharman's Cross, a rearranged game from earlier on in the season.  This means their record so far this season reads 4 wins from 5 games with matches against Monkspath and Valley Primary to come.  Their aim is to reach the season ending tournament with the top four teams in the large schools' league competing against each other in a play-off competition to crown the best large school in South Solihull.

During the ESFA football week (or fortnight, in the case of Greswold), football coaching sessions will be taking place at lunchtimes for other year groups as well, with staff and coaches ensuring fair play, sportsmanship and the schools values are always promoted and demonstrated.

  • A winning start to this year's Sportshall Athletics campaign!

    Wed 25 Jan 2023

Yesterday, 30 year 5 and 6 pupils took part in the Level 1 qualifying event for this year's School Games Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire Sportshall Athletics competition.  Against nine other schools and with less time to prepare this year, the children did fabulously well and won their event by a margin of 80 points!

Sportshall Athletics events are made up of 6 track and 6 field events for both boys and girls with pupils only able to compete in two track and two field events in total so it was a real team effort!  Of the 12 boys and girls races, Greswold won 9 of them!

They now go straight through to the Level 2 event, the South Solihull Area Final in March, to compete against the strongest other large schools for a place in the County Finals.  Plenty of time to practice!  Well done everyone!

    1st - Greswold (462 points)

    2nd - Dicken's Heath (382)

    3rd - Oak Cottage (302)

  • Happy Lunar New Year!

    Mon 23 Jan 2023

This morning in KS2 assembly, we raised awareness of and helped to celebrate the arrival of the Lunar New Year, the year of the rabbit, with our children.  We heard from several of our pupils, including Amber and Oscar, both from east Asia, and found out some amazing and interesting facts about the traditions and festivals.  Happy Lunar New Year to all our families at Greswold.

  • Y5 and 6 Sportshall Athletics trials conclude. Now the real hard work begins......

    Thu 19 Jan 2023

The start of the 2023 School Games Sportshall Athletics competition starts next week and the children in years' 5 and 6 have been demonstrating amazing commitment and desire to be part of the competing Greswold team.  In the end, 29 pupils were chosen to represent the school at the qualifying event next week at Tudor Grange Sports' Centre but the final decision was extremely difficult.  The children really pushed themselves to do the best they could which has in turn enabled the chosen team to really exceed even their own expectations.

As always, thank you to the support of the PTA who always help to fund the extensive array of Sportshall Athletics equipment, helping the children to practise using Reversaboards, Hi-steppers, Speed Bounce mats, Medicine Balls, Foam Javelins and a whole host of other resources, which are the exact same products used at the events, something which has enormously helped previous teams to achieve some amazing results, as you can see below:

  • Dogs Trust Workshops

    Mon 16 Jan 2023

We had an exciting start to the week as we welcomed Becky and Rolo from the Dogs Trust to teach pupils about safety around dogs. Some of the children (and staff!) had a shock as they walked into assembly this morning and thought that there was a real dog in school! However, on closer inspection, they realised that Rolo was a lovely labrador cuddly toy. Becky and Rolo taught the children how to behave around dogs and also helped them to understand more about how dogs see the world too. Some children have already had their workshops with Becky and some have got them to look forward to. Please ask your child about any top tips they have learnt.

  • Attendance Success Continues

    Mon 16 Jan 2023

We are pleased to celebrate another week of good attendance with Robins maintaining their 100% record for 2023 and Otters very close behind with 99.1%. A special mention goes to our Nursery children who had some of the highest attendance in the school, resulting in them winning the Weekly Attendance Award for the very first time!

  • Unprecedented Greswold Basketball success!

    Fri 13 Jan 2023

This week saw the return of the School Games 3v3 South Solihull Basketball competition, an event in only its second year after being introduced last year to coincide with the Birmingham Commonwealth Games' event of the same format.   This year's event took place at at Tudor Grange Academy.  First up were the year 6 boys on Tuesday who were competing against 11 other schools in a fiercely competitive event which resulted in Greswold actually winning the whole competition.  A fantastic achievement from the boys and thank you to Mrs Rowe and Miss Bragg for helping them to succeed.

It didn't stop there though!  Thursday saw the girls' competition taking place with a year 6 Greswold team up against 8 other schools from around South Solihull and guess what?  They won the whole competition as well.  What an amazing feat for not just one but both school teams to not only play with fairness and teamwork but with desire, ambition and the will to achieve their potential.  All the children involved will receive a certificate and medal.

What a wonderful way to start the sporting calendar in 2023! Well done everyone.

  • A great start back!

    Mon 09 Jan 2023

Wow! We are pleased to announce that 3 classes had the 'perfect' start to 2023 with 100% attendance for the first week back. Congratulations to Oaks, Robins and Squirrels.

  • Winners galore at the end of term House Point assemblies!

    Wed 14 Dec 2022

There were lots of winners at today's House Point assemblies.  Not only were a boy and girl in each class awarded with a certificate for the most house points this half term but a whole host of prizes and awards were given out for other successes too.

St David's are now top of the House Point leaderboard for this year after accumulating 44 whole school points at the end of the second half term.  However, it's still a close race.

Class winners of the PTA Christmas decoration competition were also announced with special decoration prizes being awarded to them.

So far this year, over 150 pupils across the school have achieved their first WOW badge after logging an active journey at least once a week in November.  The team of Junior Travel Ambassadors will be giving out the badges over the next two days.

Finally, well done to Year 4 Chaffinches who were awarded a certificate for achieving 97% attendance so far this year, the best of any class in the school.  This was closely followed by year 3 Wrens where children have attended school 96.8% of the time.  A special mention should go to Year 2 Badgers who had the best attendance in KS1 and EY with 96.3%.

  • Design & Technology lessons showcasing future inventors, innovators, engineers and designers of the future here at Greswold!

    Mon 12 Dec 2022

Design and Technology has seen some major changes to its curriculum this year and already, school is seeing the positive impact on the children's learning.

Year 4 have been appreciating the generosity of the Greswold school community by using the Lego kindly donated by families to experiment with prototypes, eventually designing skyscrapers and buildings which house a n effective lighting system.

In recent weeks, year 2 have completed a vehicle making project around the mechanisms of axles and wheels based on their history topic of the Great Fire of London.  Year 5's Controllable Vehicles project best demonstrates the progressive nature of the D&T curriculum with children using their knowledge of axles to construct chassis which accommodate electrical components to power a pulley, allowing their vehicles to move.  This project also showcased how the curriculum encourages children to learn in different ways by pupils within each team learning a different skill and adopt a certain role generating a purposeful collaborative project.

From there, year 6 are using their knowledge of pulleys and electrical components to design toys for younger pupils to play with.  They've surveyed Reception children to see what sort of things entertain them and used the feedback to design and make carousel products.  This approach epitomizes the approach of adding purpose and context to each D&T unit of work.

With this in mind, watch out for muffins being designed and made by the older pupils to be sold at the PTA Summer Fayre in July!
