• The learning never stops......even during the summer holidays!

  A representative from Solihull Libraries department visited school today to help launch the annual summer reading challenge which started on Saturday 9 July and runs until Saturday 10 September.  The children are challenged to read six books.  To take part the children need to sign up at their nearest Solihull library where they will receive their collector's card and can pick up a set of stickers each time they read a library book.  When they have completed the challenge, they will receive a medal, a certificate and the chance to enter a free prize draw.

• Summer fayre fun!

  On Saturday, the PTA held a marvellous Summer fayre on a truly glorious sunny afternoon.  Along with a variety of exciting stalls on offer, there was a Police dog handler, a gymnastics display and a wonderful Skills Builder course for both parents and pupils to enjoy. 

   

  Thank you to all the families who attended and helped contribute to a lovely celebratory atmosphere which really showcased Greswold's community spirit.  We await to hear the amount of money raised but, rest assured, all funds will be used to further enhance the children education across the whole school.   

  

• A day in the life...out of the classroom at Greswold

  Just another typically interesting, purposeful and action packed day at Greswold on Thursday......and that wasn't even in the classrooms.

   

  Whilst year 6 were rehearsing for their end of year production in the upper school hall, all staff were involved at different times throughout the day in being trained on how to effectively implement our new phonics scheme for September, Supersonic Phonic Friends.   

   

  Year 2 Rabbits were busy adding the final touches to their cheerleading performance for next week's local competition whilst all pupils participating in peripatetic violin lessons put on a show for years' 3-5 during assembly!

   

  Last but not least, we can't forget to mention KS2 pupils practising each of their events in the morning for the afternoon's very busy and very entertaining Junior Sports' Day with over 300 parents in attendance too!

• Shikshak Vandan Divas – Teacher Appreciation Day

  On Sunday 3rd July, Miss Smith, Mrs Hanlon, Mrs Gibson and Mrs Scott were invited by Dhruvi and Rudra to attend an event named Shikshak Vandan Divas, which translates as ‘Teacher Appreciation Day’ organised by the Birmingham chapter of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (UK).

  In the Hindu faith, we came to learn that the respect for teachers is highly important value imparted by all. It was truly amazing to see this value so deeply engrained in all those children attending HSS (UK) and it certainly shows in the pupils attending our school too.

  The event was held in a local temple, attended by over 200 including 26 teachers from 10 schools in Solihull and Birmingham. Various presentations were made including yoga and games. The teachers were venerated through ‘puja’ ceremony, showering us with petals and offering respect. It was a heartfelt, personal tribute, with many teachers later commenting on how emotional it all felt.

  The president of HSS (UK) shared a few warm words with us “we applaud all teachers and teaching staff for their continued support and efforts. We owe a lot to our teachers for playing such an important part in the development and learning of our children, and for nurturing them to become upstanding citizens”.

  

• Reception, KS1 and KS2 Sports' Days - another fabulous success!

  Glorious sunshine greeted our parents at the annual Sports' Days this week and what memorable occasions they indeed were for our school community.

   

  On Wednesday, St Andrew's were the victors of the Reception and KS1 event and St David's took first prize in our KS2 competition on Thursday.  Thank you to all the parents who attended, some of which will have been attending a whole school Sports' Day for the first time whereas others, it was possibly their last event as their child approach the end of their Greswold career.  Thank you to the teachers, parents, pupils and Miss Bragg (event organiser) for making it a thoroughly enjoyable occasion.  

  

• A triumphant success - The PTA funded Circus Skills workshop for every child in the school!

  Every pupil from Nursery up to Year 6 including The Den have been treated to a session of circus skills over the past two weeks, kindly funded as a thank you by the PTA and another example of how fundraising helps to enhance the children's curriculum experience. 

   

  The children and their teachers all had wonderful fun as well as being able to put their Skills Builder understanding to good practise.   

  

• A tough day at the new look Borough Sports'

  This week, nearly 30 year 6 and 5 pupils attended the revamped Borough Sports' competition at Norman Green track, Tudor Grange Sports' Centre.  The event itself took place throughout the day with competitors participating in a number of events instead of the previous 2.  The children only competed against other large schools and, as always, represented the school impeccably.  Mrs Mills noted how supportive and encouraging each pupil was to their teammates, crowding round each one to congratulate theme on their performance.  Well done children, your sportsmanship is something to be admired and proud of.  

  

• Greswold and the local community working in partnership

  Yesterday, our year 6 pupils were each presented with the transition gift of a book entitled 'Watch Out!, a children's guide to everyday dangers' as they prepare for the next step of their learning career.  The books were sponsored by the Solihull Rotary Club, a nationwide and international fundraising organisation, with our own PTA funding half of them.

   

  Keith and Phil from Solihull Rotary presented the children with their books, and as you can see from the photos, the children were very keen to read, learn and enjoy them. 

   

  Another example of Greswold working in partnership with it's local community for the betterment of our pupils and their families.   

  

• A great effort from Year 5 in the final of King Edward's School Maths Competition

  This week, four year 5 children attended the final of the Maths competition hosted by King Edward's School.  There were 12 schools participating in total with the children competing brilliantly, working as a team and showing our values.  The team so narrowly missed out on third place but Mr Hobday, who accompanied them being Maths Subject Leader, was so proud of how well they did in reaching the final and coming 4th out of 12 schools.  Well done children, you're a credit to year 5 and the whole school.  

  

• Greswold's Active Travel Campaign - A review

  Yesterday marked the final day that winners of the Active Travel campaign prize draw received their prizes.  School would like to take this opportunity to thank all the pupils, staff and families in making the campaign such a success.  It's also wonderful to hear stories from parents about how their children are now wanting to travel more actively to school each day.  In all honesty, this was the main aim of the campaign itself, to try to engineer a change in behaviour in pupils and their families when travelling to school in the mornings.  The data, compiled by families inputting their travel each day using Travel Tracker, also also reflected this positive changed in behaviour. 

   

  There were over 11,000 journeys logged during the period 19th March to 19th May.

   

  Only 586 of these were deemed non-active! 

   

  49% of the whole school population took part in the campaign by logging their travel using Travel Tracker.

   

  Of all journeys logged, 95% of them were deemed active!

   

  Before the start of the campaign, 37% of pupils walked, cycle and scooted to school each day.  This increased to nearly 60% by the end of the campaign.  6% of families used Park & Stride venues initially which has now risen to 19% promoting school to start sourcing additional venues to host vehicle users looking park away from school.   

   

  In April, Greswold achieved 442nd place nationally for their participation and in May, we attained our highest position of 9th in Solihull.  

   

  Elms came 1st place in the school's competition, followed by Otters and Owls and the following pupils won a bike, scooter or Fit-bit:

   

  KS1 & Early Years' - (1) Hedgehog in Bumblebees, (2) Tree in Bumblebees, (3) Cactus in Otters,

  (4) Balloon in Otters, (5) Mushroom in Owls, (6) Sheep in Badgers, (7) Jigsaw in Nursery.

   

  KS2 - (1) Shell in Sparrows, (2) Giraffe in Elms, (3) Apple in Wrens, (4) Duck in Oaks, (5) Fire in Skylarks, (6) Saturn in Oaks, (7) Whale in Sycamores. 

   

  Over 900 WOW badges were issues to pupils across the school with pupils earning one each month being entered into the prize draw.  The interest in these badges and the success of children using the Travel Tracker has prompted school to introduce the use of the Living Streets Travel Tracker scheme as a whole year initiative starting in September for pupils to take part in if they wish.
