• 118 WOW badges to be given out this week!

  Results are in for the Travel Tracker in June with 118 badges to be given out.  This represents 20% engagement which is below previous months.  Engagement for July so far is only 11% so far so we've got just over a week to get this figure up!  Considering the weather is glorious at the moment, there are dozens of pupils who must be missing out on a badge as they haven't recorded their journeys.

   

  Let's give the children what they deserve.  By simply recording one day of active travel a week, your children can earn a badge but remember you only have a two week window for completing journeys in the past.  

  

• A look back at how Greswold has reached out to its community this year

  Greswold has always prided itself in promoting outreach work with its local and wider community, in order to benefit the experiences of our pupils.

   

  Such experiences include events like Community Week which helped to celebrate the uniqueness of our family community.

   

  However, we also utilise other avenues of collaboration to broaden our perspectives even more and to enable us to develop citizenship amongst pupils and adults.

   

  Collaborating with local universities like Birmingham City University, Wolverhampton and Warwick has enabled us to accommodate and develop trainee teachers which in turn helps children to experience being taught by different people.  In total, we've hosted 5 very successful placements this year. 

   

  Greswold has also hosted Y10 students from Light Hall, Alderbrook, Tudor Grange, Lode Heath, St Peter's and Arden secondary schools which has aided staff in meeting the needs of the pupils whilst giving the young people an insight into working life.

   

  Members of the Triple Crown school community have been working with us each week to provide 1:1 reading sessions for year 1 pupils.

   

  St Helen's Church and St Alphege Church once again hosted pupils for Harvest, Christmas and Easter services. 

   

  Metrobank in Solihull centre visited us during the autumn term to give advice to year 6 pupils about banking and saving.  This culminated in all year 6 pupils visiting the bank itself and even seeing the vault! 

   

  Solihull School have once again allowed us to use their fabulous theatre, Bushell Hall, for year 6 to perform their final performance of their primary careers.  They have also hosted Solihull Sings and Science workshops for our pupils in Y5.

   

  King Edward's school kindly invited our Y4 and Y5 teams to enter their annual Maths competition while we have worked with both the outgoing and incoming mayors on various projects at the Civic Suite in Solihull centre, indeed very memorable events. 

   

  Mrs Scott and two year 6 pupils represented Greswold at the Remembrance Service in Solihull centre in November while an artist mum of a year 2 pupil visited school to take a special one off art workshop with some talented artists in year 6.

   

  We've also hosted the Police and Fire Service who have met with our EYFS pupils as part of their learning. 

   

  The Dogs Trust workshops, Seven Trent assembly, Solihull Sustainable Team's Air Pollution assembly and a specially arranged Parliament assembly were just some other ways of bringing further context to our curriculum. 

   

  We will continue to source new and exciting opportunities to enhance the experiences of their learning further and if any parents know of such opportunities, please let us know. 

   

   

   

   

   

    

   

   

  

• The Tudors are back at Greswold!

  Recently, Year 4 pupils took part in an immersive workshop to complement their learning on the Tudor era. Funded by the PTA, the themed day consisted of: 

   

  • A battle between the Lancastrians and the Yorkists

  • Looking through Archaeology Boxes

  • Looking at the Armoury worn by the Tudors

  • Tudor Economy

  • Archery

  • Examining the different Kings and Queens 

   

  As always, the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience which helped to solidify their curriculum learning.  Thank you to the year 4 staff for organising such a memorable event. 

  

• St George's crowned House champions for 2024-25!

  In this morning's House Point assemblies, St George's were deservedly awarded the House trophy for this academic year.  But what a close race it was!

   

  St Andrew's rallied in the new year and were only eight points away from making a remarkable comeback with St Patrick's finishing second only four points behind the winners. 

   

  Not only did house point totals in each classroom contribute to the result but the scores from both Sports' Days and this week's Y6 House Sports' competition were added to the final totals. 

   

  Heidi and Mia, house captains for St George's proudly held the trophy aloft in assembly which followed on from a lovely speech each house captain of the four houses had given about their memories of Greswold.  

   

  These memories included  the Y6 residential visit to Condover Hall, the Y4 residential visit to Standon Bowers, memories of participation in the numerous sporting events we do here at Greswold and an early memory about reception from Mia.  Isabella even mentioned this year's SATs as being something she fondly remembered! 

   

  Y3 Sparrows were presented with a certificate for being the class with the best attendance in the school this year and Y5 Oaks, Y5 Elms, Y6 Willows, Bumblebees and Y2 Otters were given house points for their engagement in the Travel Tracker this year. 

   

  Children also received certificates for passing the module C of their BEAM programme.

   

  Well done to our whole Greswold community for making the House Point race so exciting this year!  

  

• Y3 Sparrows - the best attendance in Greswold this academic year!

  Congratulations to Year 3 Sparrows who've achieved the best attendance of any class at Greswold this academic year. 

   

  Their attendance percentage of 96.5% was 1% more than any other class, which is really impressive.  Thank you to the parents of those children who've obviously played a big part in this success.  

  

• Year 1 help to say Thank You to our wonderful parent volunteers

  Year 1 pupils helped Mrs Scott and Mr Hornsey say a big thank you to those parents who have volunteered at Greswold in some way this academic year. 

   

  Our Volunteer Thank You Tea on Monday included parents who had attended educational visits, undertaken 1:1 reading with children, contributed to our fantastic Community Week and, of course, been part of our very hardworking PTA. 

   

  The attendees were also treated to a poetry and dance performance by pupils from year 1, led by Miss Jones. 

   

  The role of volunteers is so important in helping Greswold to deliver its ambitious curriculum so hopefully even more parents might get involved next year too! 

  

• KS2 entertained by Y6 House Sports'

  On Monday, all KS2 pupils were invited to watch the Y6 House Sports' competition.  This event involves every single year 6 pupil in Rounders and Football games.

   

  St Andrew's and St David' were joint winners in each event with the points gained going towards Wednesday's final House Point assembly where the whole school finds out which house has won this year's competition. 

  

• Y6 tag Rugby success

  Last week, 24 Year 6 children attended the Solihull Games Tag Rugby competition on Thursday.  It was a fantastic day and the pupils played their hearts out.

   

  Our competitive (Compete) team won their first round, putting them in 'Gold' group. The competition was then steep and they walked away with 4^th position overall.

   

  Our developing (Develop) team, who were focussing more on their teamwork skills, including respect and honesty, gained the Silver position.

   

  Both Heidi and William should be commended for their outstanding skills on the pitch - so much so that Rugby scouts spotted them!

  

• A PTA Summer Fayre to remember

  What a wonderful way to wrap up this year's PTA events' calendar!  The Summer Fayre on Saturday was a brilliant success.  Thank you to all families who attended and thank you to the lovely feedback you shared too.  One new parent to Greswold commented that the event had a 'family orientated feel' which is exactly what we were aiming for.

   

  The PTA member themselves were in at 9am to continue setting up after attending school the night before to start the process.  This doesn't take into account the hours dedicated to organising the event at home and out of school beforehand.  We're very lucky to have such dedicated members of our PTA but always member, anyone can join! 

   

  Once school receives a grand total. we will inform our parent community of how much money was raised. The funding raised at these types of events goes to enhancing the curriculum opportunities and learning experiences of all the children here at Greswold. 

   

  Thanks again to everyone involved and don't forget, the September Social is on Friday 26th September, the first event of a new PTA calendar year.  

   

  

• Solihull Speaking Competition

  On Monday last week, Anusha for Y5 represented Greswold at the very first Solihull Schools Public Speaking Competition. She delivered a four minute speech on the topic of how she sees advanced technology making the world a better place. The judges included the past Mayor of Solihull, the Chief Executive of Solihull MBC and a Deputy Lieutenant (who represent His Majesty The King). The certificates and prizes were awarded by the current Mayor.

   

  The competition was officiated and organised by Solihull and District Soroptimists whose Competition Secretary emailed, following the competition, to say:

   

  On behalf of the Education Group of SI Solihull, I would like to thank you for taking part in our Solihull Schools Speaking Competition on Monday.
  Despite the heat, we had a wonderful afternoon and heard from eight young people, giving their speeches on topics that really interested them.  One of the Judges has written to us and said “All the young people truly represented the very best of what Solihull has to offer, articulate, passionate and confident”.  We all felt the same!  Please give your student this message and they certainly were a credit to your school.
  We are hoping to run the competition next year and hopefully you will be able to support it again.

   

  Greswold is so proud of Anusha for showing her self-confidence and personality along with high standards of knowledge, content, expression and presentation. Well done, Anusha.
