Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
Today's fundraising day for Children in Need involved all adults and children dressing up in non-uniform and wearing odd socks. Thank you for your generous donations. In total we raised £522.90 by the end of the day. Well done everyone.
This morning marked Greswold's first Open Morning for prospective parents for Nursery and Reception and, yet again, our year 6 tour guides were the stars of the show!
Over 50 parents visited this morning and they were treated to very informative tours, perfectly demonstrated by some of the feedback comments below:
'Yash and Sanvi were very thorough and well informed. They answered all of our questions and went over and above to ask if we could see other parts of the school. Senior leaders and class teachers were friendly and willing to answer all questions.'
'Lovely tour, nice to be led by current pupils who were very mature and knowledgeable.'
'Younus and Charlie were great. They explained things well, were confident, knowledgeable and articulate. We were inspired by the school and the SEND provision, teaching methods and adaptability.'
Eva and Isla were incredible tour guides who had a breadth of knowledge about the school. They're a real credit!'

At the end of last half term a group of Y6 pupils were invited to take part in a maths enrichment event designed to deepen and challenge their mathematical thinking. They were encouraged to work with pupils from other schools and their first challenge of the day was to solve a question using all four operations but to do it in a really interesting way. I am proud to say that all our pupils represented our school brilliantly and demonstrated our values of BRICKS throughout the morning, especially curiosity and success.
17 pupils accompanied Mr Wilson, Mrs Frankland and Mrs Scott to Solihull School to hear Dame Jane Goodall speak on Reasons for Hope. Dame Goodall is well known as an expert anthropologist and the founder of 'Roots and Shoots' programme for schools. She has worked extensively on conservation and animal welfare issues. In April 2002, she was named a UN Messenger of Peace.
Her talk was inspirational, informative and enjoyable for the pupils chosen from Y3-Y6 to represent Greswold. Isaac from Y5 Oaks even took the opportunity to ask her a direct question during the question and answer session.
This week, Greswold took two year 5 teams to the annual School Games' South Solihull Dodgeball competition. The event itself is based more on the School Games' values of honesty, teamwork and respect, rather than who wins the individual games. Greswold finished 3rd overall which is a really good achievement given how many teams entered.
Some comments from the attending children included:
"It was really fun, the time went so quickly."
"I enjoyed helping out the other teams and working with new people when they didn't have enough players and we had too many."
"I liked how we recognised the children who were being good sportspeople, rather than just who is good at sport."
Well done to everyone involved and to Mrs Reilly for supervising at the event.
During assemblies this week, we turned our thoughts to poppies which are worn at this time of year as a sign of remembrance but also hope for the future. On Sunday, two pupils from Y6 will lay a wreath of poppies at the war memorial in Solihull on behalf of Greswold.
Every year a silence is held throughout the country at 11 o’clock in the morning of the 11th November and the following words are read:
They shall not grow old
As we who are left grow old
Age shall not weary them
Nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We shall remember them
We will now stand in silence for one minute followed by a prayer.
Dear God,
We shall remember those who have lived and died in the service of others.
We pray for all who suffer through war and are in need.
We ask for your help and blessing to do good in the world you have made.
And to live in peace and harmony with one another and with you.
Amen.
Greswold recently received a certificate from Birmingham City University as a thank you for the continued close partnership both establishments have maintained over a number of years. Being a principal partner means that we regularly accommodate teaching students from BCU for placements, offering experience, guidance, support and mentoring during the challenging journey of becoming a classroom practitioner.
This is just one example of several other partnerships Greswold has in terms of providing aspiring teachers and teaching assistants with the first hand experience they need in working with children and young people. These partnerships also extend to Warwick University for students undertaking PGCE courses as well as Solihull College where a number of teaching assistant students will fulfil their course requirements with us.
For school and its pupils, it's a perfect additional resource to offer close support and intervention to promote pupil progress, and for the students, they receive the most up-to-date professional assistance and guidance from our staff.
We also host several year 10 and year 11 students from local secondary schools who undertake work experience at various times of the year at Greswold for a taster to see if they might feel teaching is for them, an opportunity many of our current staff will no doubt have had in their formative years too!
The boys' and girls' football seasons began this week with two games arranged at Tudor Grange Sports' centre astro. The girls' team's game was unfortunately cancelled, however they have upcoming games against Shirley Heath, Tidbury Green, Widney, St Alphege and Sharman's Cross schools as part of open league 3.
The boys' team are the medium/large school open league 3 against yesterday's opponents Our Lady of the Wayside, Valley, Langley, Monkspath and Tidbury Green.
The winners of each league will then go through to a South Solihull play-off in March or April against all other league winners to crown the South Solihull boys' and girls' champions.
In yesterday's boys' game against Our Lady of the Wayside, the pupils selected represented the school magnificently and were very unlucky not to win their match, hitting the post in the final minute. The final score was 2-2. Considering it was their first match playing together with some players playing in unaccustomed positions, it was a very promising start.
Match Report by Joseph and Dylan
Greswold vs Our Lady of the Wayside
This was Greswold’s first match. Families and supporters in attendance were treated to a mouth-watering game at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre on the new astroturf pitch. The line-up was Ahon in goal, Max and Toby in defence, Joseph, Dylan and Naren in midfield and Zain up front with Hari on the bench. Wearing the Greswold football kit gave us pride. After Dylan fired home his shot into the bottom corner, the opposition capitalized on a mistake and placed their shot past Ahon and quickly scored another meaning at half time it was 2-1 to the other team. Mr Hornsey gave us a quick team talk and we came out after half time strong.
After a nerve-wracking start to the second half, Dylan placed another strike into the bottom corner making it 2-2. Greswold dominated the rest of the game but couldn’t find the winner meaning the final score was 2-2. After the game the players thought they deserved to win but a draw was a solid result.
On Wednesday, children will be able to start using our brand new outdoor gym equipment. The equipment replaces the old wooden trim trail and will accessible at lunchtimes and during lesson time by each class. You might even find a few teachers using it at some point too!
The 15 pieces of equipment has been installed with new artificial grass. The existing climbing wall has also been retained with new artificial grass now surrounding its base.
The equipment includes:
Double Strength Challenger x1
Double Health Walker x2
Double Slalom Skier x3
Sky Stepper x3
Rower x2
Horse Rider x2
Arm & Pedal Bike x2
Thank you to everyone involved in carrying out this wonderful project.
The success of last term's Book Fair during Parent Consultation evenings has meant the children's reading at Greswold will benefit even more!
Over £2,000 was spent by Greswold families on the two evenings meaning the commission raised equates to £1,433.37 for school to purchase even more reading books for our wonderful library.
Thank you so much for your generosity and for promoting reading amongst your families and Greswold pupils. Your positive attitude towards reading means all pupils will benefit in the near future!
