  • The new school athletics kit makes a winning start!

    Mon 22 Jan 2024

The children of Greswold have the school's PTA to be very thankful for after wearing the kit, recently purchased by them, during an event they ended up winning.

The children were very proud to wear the new Craft athletics kit funded by the Greswold PTA which helped spur them on to perform fabulously at the qualifying event for Sportshall Athletics today. The kit will not only be worn for Sportshall Athletics events but for the outdoor Borough athletics event in June and the Y5 and Y6 Cross Country events in September.

The kit comprises of royal blue vests with the school badge on with shorts and skorts.  Thank you to the PTA for helping to make this possible.

Our BRICKS value for this half term is Success. Here are some of the reasons pupils were awarded a Star Pupil certificate last week:

For persevering with Phonics and demonstrating our school value of success.

For participating fully in whole class discussions and challenging herself to develop new skills during independent learning time.

For persevering with her English work, even though she can find it challenging.

For showing excellent resilience even though life can be challenging sometimes. Keep smiling!

For putting a huge amount of effort into in his learning this week and for immersing himself into our Ancient Egyptian day! His costume was unbelievable and so creative.

For persevering in English. He wasn't afraid to start again once checking his work- he set himself a goal and he put so much effort into achieving it.

For being a highly organised and motivated member of the class, always trying her best with her learning and to support those around her.

  • Staggering artwork unveiled courtesy of our budding Greswold artists

    Mon 22 Jan 2024

Here's a sneak peak of Miss Summer's art competition entries which parents will be able to view at the next round of Parent Consultations soon.

We're sure families will agree that they are absolutely staggering.  The quality of each piece was immaculate and the creativity of each was also highly impressive.

Everyone at Greswold are very proud of all of our artists who entered and, no doubt, in future years to come, surely a Greswold ex-pupil will have a piece of work at the National Gallery or Tate Modern!

Look out for the artwork next time you're in school along the long corridor.

  • Helping learning to 'stick'!

    Mon 22 Jan 2024

A strategy that Greswold employs to help children retain knowledge and store it their long term memories is to demonstrate how all learning is connected and to present using different contexts.

Within this strategy, school staff use assemblies, classroom, corridor and hall displays, home learning and, most effectively, cross-curricular learning to help give added context and purpose to lessons so that children can visibly see that learning is inter-connected across our entire curriculum.

Staff are particularly skilled at interweaving common learning threads across a range of subjects so that children can be successful in retaining the breadth of knowledge and understanding set out in the national curriculum.

In our school halls, you'll see displays which replicate classroom endeavours which highlight the locality of world events as well as where things fit in chronologically.

Outside the library, the children can choose books which relate to current world events which they encounter in lessons or even at home.  They can then use their curiosity to explore these events and themes even further.

The wonderful theme days which each year group partakes in (Y6 Stone Age day and Y3 Ancient Egyptian day just last week!) help to immerse the children in their learning and provides a pertinent context to relate further learning to.

Even simple learning posters and charts at home which children may have up in their bedrooms will help with their ability to retain information and interconnect learning.

Have a look through the picture gallery to see some of these strategies in practice.  Viewing using a laptop will enable you to view the captions.

  • Year 6 transported back to the Stone Age!

    Fri 19 Jan 2024

Year 6 pupils were transported back in time to the Stone Age today as a prelude to their upcoming history curriculum learning.  The immersive day helped the children to visualise what life would have been like to many years ago and will help them with other aspects of their learning such as history, English and Art.  Well done to the staff and to families for making the day even better by donning very authentic costumes!

  • Language of the Month for January

    Fri 19 Jan 2024

Following on from December's sign language of the month is this month's language which is Hungarian.  This is the first time we've had Hungarian as language of the month.  As well as learning some key phrases of Hungarian, could you suggest 5 key facts about Hungary? For starters, what is the capital city of Hungary?

  • Impressive 3rd place finish for Greswold's rowing team!

    Fri 19 Jan 2024

Yesterday evening, Greswold's Y6 Rowing team were involved in South Solihull's annual event at Langley Secondary School.

After training with Mr Isles (and his personal rowing machine), the children attained really impressive  results finishing 3rd (boys) and 3rd (girls) respectively.

Thank you to Mr Isles and Mrs Powell who were also in attendance and well done to everyone involved.

  • Year 6 visit the Metro bank in Solihull town centre as part of their community partnership work

    Tue 16 Jan 2024

During the second half of the autumn term, Year 6 had three visits from staff at Metro Bank in Solihull centre.  These visits involved the children learning about savings, what interest is, the difference between debit and credit, what investment is and how to balance an account.

This week, each class had the opportunity to visit Metro Bank in Solihull and find out what happens inside a real bank. Children got to see how an ATM works, how a bank card is made, how you can take your coins in to be counted and they even got to look inside the bank's vault. They also learned about different roles you could have in a bank.

Pupils really enjoyed the opportunity, behaved impeccably and showed our values throughout.

Well done Year 6. We hope the skills you have acquired will be put to good use in the future!

  • A perfect way to start Year 3's learning on Ancient Egypt

    Mon 15 Jan 2024

Year 3 pupils took part in an Ancient Egyptian themed day today, helping to immerse them in their new learning for this term.  Well done to the children and their families for taking time to make them look fabulously authentic for their special day.   We're sure such an experience will have fuelled their curiosity so thank you to the year 3 staff for organising such a memorable event.
