Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
Dear Parents and Carers,
To help us retain Greswold's positive relationship with our local residents, could vehicle users please park respectfully around Ferndown Road, Buryfield Road and Links Drive?
We are currently receiving complaints regarding incidents (similar to the photos below) where parents are blocking part of a house's drive, making it very difficult for residents to access their own homes! Also, this sort of behaviour isn't in keeping with our Greswold values, especially the value of Respect, which we promote right across our school community.
Please respect the local residents, and if you are finding it difficult in parking around school, Park and Stride venues are in operation which you can find out about on our Sustainable Travel page.
Thank you
This morning's Star Pupil assembly really showcased how special and unique our children are, here at Greswold. The BRICKS theme this week of celebrating similarities and differences was clearly evidenced through the assortment of different ways Greswold children had been both thoughtful and successful this week.
Sarah, in Nightingales, had previously written a letter to her majesty the Queen, when she was in year 3, about her motivation to conserve the rainforests, inspired by the topic she was learning about in school at the time. This week, she received a response, a lovely letter from the Prince and Princess of Wales who sent their warmest wishes and best thanks for her letter, which you can read below. Well done Sarah, what a lovely thing to do and something special to keep forever!
We also heard about successes this week in football for the year 6 boys and everyone congratulated the Junior Travel Ambassadors (who received their badges) for taking on such an important role.
The reasons given for the why each pupil received a certificate were unique in themselves, heart warming and inspiring for everyone to hear.
Families and supporters in attendance were treated to a perfect performance from the boys' school football team who began their large schools' football league season this evening at West Warwickshire Sports' Centre.
Unfortunately, their second game against Sharman's Cross was forfeited by the opposition meaning the team had already accrued a 3-0 win without even kicking a ball! Could they now make it two wins out of two in their first game against Olton Primary? The answer was most definitely yes!
Sporting their new Greswold football kits, courtesy of our wonderful PTA, the players performed wonderfully well and were a credit to their teachers, their families and the whole school community. The final result was 5-0 to Greswold, a perfect platform from which to continue next week with tough games against Dorridge and Balsall Common.
A special mention should also to go to the other year 5 and 6 boys who, in yesterday's lunchtime football club, helped to prepare the team for their first game with a really competitive training session. All in all, a real whole school team performance! Well done everyone.
The last week of term marked the reintroduction of our onsite Parent Consultation evenings. School would like to thank our families for participating in such an important, purposeful and community event. It's been a long while since parents were able to explore the interior of the school and though there was a fair degree of directions and tours being given, a large number of parents expressed how much they'd enjoyed being part of it. The fabulous writing of the children were on display throughout the school and this was noticed and positively commented on by many parents as they walked round.
On another positive note, the Book Fair which took place in the library on both evenings was a massive success with over £1800 worth of books being purchased. This means school will receive £1000 worth of books from the publishing company which is a huge bonus and something which could only be achieved through the generosity of our school community, due in part, we're sure, to our children having very positive meetings! Thank you to everyone involved, especially Miss McCauslin for organising the Book Fair.
The first major inter-school sports' competition took place at Old Silhillians over two evenings recently. The South Solihull Schools' Cross Country team event always kicks off the year's busy sporting calendar and, as always, Greswold was heavily involved with the children performing fantastically well.
Our year 6 boys' team won their event with a combined score of just 72 points, 37 points better than the second placed team (The aim of Cross Country is to get the lowest score) with the girls' year 5 team achieving a bronze medal place too!
Thank you to Miss Bragg, Mrs Beddow, Mr Chater, Mr Isles and Mrs Foster to trained and/or accompanied the children at the event. All of the children represented the school, and South Solihull for that matter, magnificently well and made their teachers and families very proud. Well done children!
This morning's House Point assemblies not only celebrated pupil successes in achieving the most points in their class, but also helped the children to reflect on their personal highlights of the first half term.
On site Parent Consultations, the Book Fair, Harvest Festivals, writing displays, new Supersonic Phonics Friends' lessons and the fact that lots of children are still walking, cycling and scooting to school were all examples of things which were discussed.
With regards to this final highlight, the pupils were also informed that the Travel Tracker will be reintroduced to the school starting on Monday 31st October with each child being allocated a symbol and being able to log their travel from home or school if necessary. The badge threshold will change to only one active journey a week, compared to the Active Travel Campaign's three!
The children's attendance was celebrated too. Whole school attendance so far this year is just over 96% compared to last year's 94%, an obvious improvement already and not far off school's overall aim of 97%. Chaffinches in year 4 lead the way in attendance this term and received a certificate. So far attendance in that class is over 98%! Otters in year 2 also received a certificate for the most improved attendance this term. They even scored 100% attendance this week meaning they received the weekly trophy too.
St George's is leading the way so far in the House Point competition with a score of 41 points with St Patrick's in 2nd on 40 points, St David's in 3rd on 39 points and St Andrew's in 4th on 32 points.
The assembly concluded with a reflection about being thankful for all the hard work and determination of others to keep the children safe, happy and motivated.
Our Book fair returns to school next week to coincide with Parent Consultation evenings. It will be held in the library on Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 October from 4pm. We will be accepting payment by cash or card. Parents can view the books available to buy on:
https://bookfairs.scholastic.co.uk/travelling-books/the-books
Parents of Nursery pupils are encouraged to visit the Book Fair, if you wanted to, on one of these evenings after school, as it won't be possible to run the fair on the week of your meetings.
Thank you
This afternoon, some pupils from Y4 took time out from their busy afternoon to share this week's wonderful writing with Mrs Scott. Their learning task was to write a detailed character introduction and to be successful they were encouraged to use powerful vocabulary, a variety of sentence starters with necessary commas and a simile or metaphor. Mrs Scott was very impressed. Have a look at the Y4 writing below but see if you can spot an example from Y6 which was recognised as part of our Star Pupil assembly this morning.
We are proud of how all children are already demonstrating their writing talents. Have a look at how we are celebrating their writing across the school.
Greswold's value of belonging was well and truly demonstrated this morning with the reintroduction of Harvest Festivals back at St Helen's Church on St Helen's Road. Representatives of St Helen's Church led by Reverend Sue were wonderful hosts and thoroughly enjoyed having all the children from years' 1-6 (in two separate assemblies) at the church to celebrate Harvest and to bring our community closer together.
The children listened to and took part in the story of The Rich Farmer, were entertained and educated by a quiz about where in the world some of our fruit came from, and sang each Harvest song beautifully. They also got to have a walk through a beautiful autumnal wood on the way to the event.
Thank you to Mrs Rochelle who made the wonderful display at the front of the church hall and to the PTA who helped to box the generous donations from our parents ready to be delivered to food banks and charities.
Next week, a number of our bi-lingual children will visit the Hermitage on Lode Lane to deliver more of the donations to the housing community there as well as spending sometime talking to them about their first language and teaching them a few things we're sure!
